By early afternoon, I put the finishing touches on the Hart Commonsâ sketch. Hart Commons was the tentative name Iâd given the project. When the front door opened, I found a man wearing a gray pinstripe three-piece suit with a plum colored tie and matching pocket square and carrying a brown leather attaché case standing thereâhis slicked-back dark hair an almost jet black that wouldnât move in a wind tunnel.
âMr. Carter,â he said. I instantly recognized the voice of my client, Stephen Wellington.
âMr. Wellington,â I said. âWhat a surprise. Wasnât expecting you.â I hadnât told this guy about my new storefront location yet.
âI see youâve settled into town nicely.â The ice in his voice stopped me from offering my hand.
âOne of the objections thrown at me is that Iâm an outsider coming in to make changes. This location is merely an answer to negate that.â
âYouâre quite the strategist.â He moved around the area, taking in everything, and fiddled with the leaves on a plant. âAlthough reaching a deal with Mr. Palmer is taking longer than I had expected.â
âAfter assessing the situation here, Iâve concluded that patience is the key to getting this done.â
âWhile patience may be a virtue, itâs not one I possess.â Stephen wrapped his knuckles on the assistantâs desk.
âLewis will be here any minute to look at the preliminary sketches for the new building.â
âWhy is that something he needs to know?â He opened a desk drawer.
âIn order to let go of the land, he needs to know how itâs going to change the town. Most of these people do. Iâve found that they care a great deal about this place. And thatâs the key to getting him to sell.â
The man smirked and rolled his eyes while continuing on the perusal of my office space. What grown man does that?
âWould you like to see the preliminary sketches of the building, and we can nail down more specifics while youâre here?â Most clients wanted to know more about the commercial complexes they commissioned.
âYes, of course.â
âRight this way.â
He followed me to the conference room and gave the plans that Iâd worked for hours on a cursory glance.
"As you can see," I said, directing his attention back to the board propped on an easel. "Most of the stores are East facing to capitalize on the lake view. But, let's split it into two buildings and have a courtyard in between, bringing a spot of nature and creating a space that people could use in a variety of ways."
"Looks good," Stephen said, retrieving a cell phone from his pocket and staring at the screen. "If you'll excuse me." He exited the room and moved toward the kitchenette and the back of the building.
I exhaled and leaned against the table, and waited. The front door opened, and I stepped out of the conference room to find Lewis. His thinning gray hair and flannel shirt stood in stark contrast to Stephen Wellington.
"Come on back. I was just showing my client the building plans. He's stepped out back for a call," I said as Lewis ambled toward me.
